The Great British Bake Off Shakes Things Up

“The Great British Bake Off” (known as The Great British Baking Show” in the United States) is back with a mostly new cast after its move to Netflix.

After the show’s move from the BBC to Channel 4 in the United Kingdom, hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins decided to depart, as did judge Mary Bell. The only remaining judge is Paul Hollywood: the man viewers love to hate. Comedians Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig OBE (an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her services to broadcasting) have taken the place of hosting, while celebrity chef-restaurateur Prue Leith is joining the judging table with Hollywood.

On departing the show, Berry stated “What a privilege and honour it has been to be a part of seven years of magic in a tent- ‘The Great British Bake off.’ … My decision to stay with the BBC is out of loyalty to them, as they have nurtured me, and the show, that was a unique and brilliant format from day one.”

The streaming service acquired “The Great British Baking Show” after its departure from PBS. The next three seasons of the reality series will be released through Netflix in the US, with ten episodes being available already, with more to come later this year and in 2019. In addition to the normal programming, Netflix also has plans to release annual two-episode holiday specials for the next three years.

We’ve yet to see what Netflix will bring to the table when it comes to the show, but so far fans seem hopeful. Although, it’s admittedly been hard to part with the original cast. Paul Hollywood admitted that the show would be moving away from the innuendos that created so many iconic lines.

Hollywood suggested “Maybe we should do an outtakes thing after 11 pm.” He didn’t seem concerned about the removal of the crude humor, though, saying it wasn’t the be all end all of the Bake Off.

One thing’s for sure: no one likes a soggy bottom.
